A young couple approached us for the revamping of a 1980s brick veneer house that they have just purchased for their expanding family. The original layout is a compartmentalization of various rooms that disconnects the spaces internally resulting in the lack of natural daylight into the house. Our proposal was to open up the existing layout and to create a large open area suitable for work and play. The rear of the house now opens up to a light-filled kitchen + dining area where their daily routine begins and ends. Services and storage areas are tucked along the sides of the existing perimeter, connected visually by an island bench that corresponds to their dining furniture. The use of natural and simplistic materials to the joinery reflects the Owner’s personalities of wanting a quite elegance as a setting behind a vibrant, growing household. The island bench is seen as a gathering spot that will cater for the changes to the family, be it a breakfast bench or a work desk for the kids, it will be a flexible constant in the Owner’s lives.
